If you are an Australian individual, partnership, company, association, co-operative, statutory corporation or trust carrying on business in Australia you may apply for EMDG provided you:
- had annual income of not more than $30 million during the grant year
- spent at least $15,000 on eligible export promotion activities during the grant year. First-time applicants may combine two consecutive financial years expenses to meet this threshold
You will get up to 50% of your eligible export promotion expenditure over the $15,000 threshold which is not reimbursable.
Your grant will be calculated as: 50% of (total eligible expenses - $15,000). A minimum grant of $5,000 applies. The maximum grant for eligible applicants is $150,000 (2006/2007), subject to funds available in the scheme.
You may claim for expenditure on specific export promotion activities undertaken during the grant year. For your first grant you may claim expenses incurred over the last two financial years.
EMDG supports eight categories of promotional activities. You can claim:
- Overseas representatives
- Marketing consultants
- Marketing visits
- Communications
- Free samples
- Trade fairs, seminars, in-store promotions

As EMDG is designed to assist promotion, it does not support expenses arising from production or from product development, distribution or certification.
Registration for first time applicants is recommended before the end of the grant year; the completed application have to be received by Austrade between 1. July and 30. November 2008 for the Grant year 2007/2008.
